Sports: they're in the news, they're back, and they're perhaps bigger than ever. The world is watching as they're underway across the country, including in Bradenton, Florida.
From an expanded, nationally televised schedule to highlights across seemingly every sports or news outlet to viral clips on social media, the WNBA's 2020 season is back. And, it's bigger than ever. Much like the MLB and the NBA who recently began their 2020 seasons, the WNBA has emerged from the "Wubble" as one of several leagues who are successfully navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. The league has also seen support from not only long-time fans from afar and virtually, but from the NBA as well. Check out how the NBA players, who are competing just a short 2-hour drive away in Orlando, supported the WNBA's opening weekend in this story.
In an interview prior to the WNBA's opening weekend's tip off, Commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, spoke to news outlets about the resumption of the season, including increased media coverage and exposure from the "Wubble," health and safety efforts in Bradenton, Florida, and more.
Check out the full interview below with CNBC:
Regular season play for the league began on Saturday, July 25th with a triple header, including appearances from must-see players like Sabrina Ionescu, the No. 1 draft pick, and former U-Conn stars Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird.
Although the competition was fierce and the coverage was wide, one of the main talking points on Monday morning following opening weekend came from a topic that's been consistently generating headlines: social justice.
Prior to the season, the WNBA announced that they would be dedicating their season to the cause, one that many recognize as being much bigger than the sport itself. Read about the league's efforts in this article by Swish Appeal by clicking here.
