Aside from war, 2020 is the first Wimbledon to be cancelled since the inaugural Championship in 1877. While the global COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented landscape of uncertainty, the creativity and ingenuity of online athletic programming provides athletes around the globe the opportunity to be more active now than ever before.
Historically, IMG Academy has developed and hosted stars of the tennis world to train, condition, and compete on the world-renowned Bradenton, Florida campus. The beginning of the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in 1978, with an emphasis on junior tennis training at the elite level, was the beginning of the first major tennis boarding school. From Rockefeller Resort to Florida’s Gulf Coast, Nick has coached at every level to develop some of the best athletes in the game such as Serena and Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Boris Becker, Monica Seles, Anna Kournikova, Tommy Haas, and other tennis champions. Since IMG Academy purchased the school in 1987, on-campus boarding school programming has expanded to host seven additional sports across more than 600 acres, featuring top-tier professional facilities, expert coaches, and unmatched student-athlete academics.
IMG continues to be home to the world’s top ATP/WTA players, allowing student-athletes to train within an incomparable atmosphere. Amidst the cancellation of Wimbledon, social distancing, and the new global landscape, the Academy continues to be an industry leader in both athletics and academics. From advanced distance learning programming for sport and school, to IMG Academy+ online summer camps, student-athletes can continue their trajectory towards next level competition and their career goals – proving dedication like no other. In addition to online and distanced learning, IMG Academy has established new safety protocol and regulations that are applicable to upcoming on-campus programming such as tennis camps for youth and adult athletes as well as Boarding School for 6-12th grade and post-graduate student-athletes.
