Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to javelin throwing. To throw the javelin as far as possible, athletes must achieve a winning combination of speed, power and technique. So, how can you master your throwing technique within this track & field event? With IMG Academy's How-To track & field drills videos, our coaches give instruction on proper grip, positioning of the body, as well as positioning of the javelin to enable a throw that will go the distance.
In this video, you will be introduced to three track & field drills to become a better javelin thrower. Closely watch how the student-athlete performs each drill and the important skills demonstrated to improve body mechanics, power, and speed when throwing the javelin. The drills include:
In the first drill, How to Grip the Javelin, practice the three different kinds of grips (American, Finnish, and Hook) to help determine which one feels best. Next, during Executing the Draw Back drill, learn about proper alignment and how to relax the arm, shoulder, and hand when drawing the javelin back to throw. The final drill, the Standing Throw, shows how to get the most energy into your javelin throw with a focus on weight distribution and positioning of the feet, hips, and knees.
