The IMG Academy Bollettieri Tennis program's Whitney Osuigwe and Sany Gawande turned in impressive results in the Girls 12s division of the annual USTA National Clay Court Championships in Boca Raton, Fla., July 14-20. Osuigwe made a brilliant run, reaching the semifinals of the main draw. She defeated each of her first four opponents in straight sets, before being tested by 15-seeded Alexa Noel. Osuigwe gutted out a tough win to reach the semis, besting Alexa Noel, 6-7(5), 6-0, 7-6(7). However, Osuigwe fell just short of making her second finals appearance on the year when her tournament run was cut short by Caty McNally of Cincinnati, Ohio. For her efforts, Osuigwe placed third in her division, earning the Girls 12 bronze ball. Osuigwe also reached the semifinals in the doubles competition, earning a second bronze ball at the event.
Osuigwe was joined by Sany Gawande in Boca Raton, who turned in an impressive run of her own. Gawande's run through the main draw ended in the second round, but she crushed the competition in the consolation draw. After her loss, Gawande won five consecutive matches, winning the consolation final against Gia Cohen of Bradenton, Fla., who is already ranked among the top 50 prospects in the country for the class of 2019 by TennisRecruiting.net. Gawande bested Cohen by a final of 6-0, 6-2.
