IMG Academy track and field trainee Matteo Galvan won the XVII Mediterranean Games men’s 400-meter title in Mersin, Turkey with his personal-best time of 45.59 seconds. The Italian sprinter took over the lead at the 200-meter mark and never relinquished it throughout the remainder of the race.
Galvan’s performance automatically qualified him for the 14th IAAF World Championships held in Moscow, Russia from August 10-18. His time eclipsed the A-Standard of 45.60 seconds and marked his fastest outing since 2009.
Adding to the medal haul of IMG Academy-trained athletes at the event, Italian Libania Grenot took the silver medal in the women’s 200-meter dash yesterday. Misjudging the finish line, Grenot finished runner-up with a time of 23.20 seconds after a battle royale-like fight to the finish broke out during the last 30 meters. The two-time Olympian improved from the previous weekend’s European Athletics Team Championships held in Gateshead, England, where she clocked in 23.29 seconds.
Coached by IMG Academy's world-renowned speed coach Loren Seagrave, Galvan and Grenot are scheduled to contribute legs to the Italian men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay tomorrow as they aim for the IAAF World Championships A-Standard qualification times of 3:05 minutes and 3:33 minutes, respectively.
