On Friday night, IMG Academy played its first nationally ranked lacrosse opponent of the year, Houston Christian Academy. In a back and forth game, IMG Academy prevailed as Jonathan Thelen scored the game winning goal with 2:30 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Thelen had eight goals and two assists for the game, while Nick Katz added two goals. Sophomore attack Jackson Costello took on a more distributive role for the game, racking up five assists and one goal.
“Playing in our fourth game in a row, we started slow, but we were able to dig deep and we found ourselves up at half-time” Coach Jason Basso noted. “Both teams slowed up in the second half, but Riley Cocks did a great job on face-offs down the stretch, which enabled us to control possession. This is a great win for our program.”
IMG Academy was outscored 6-2 in the first quarter, but then outscored Houston Christian 7-2 in the second quarter. Cocks won the vast majority of face-offs on the night, helping to spark the team to victory.
Defensively, goalie Parker Smith shut the door, making a huge save with 1:30 left in the game that sealed the win for IMG Academy.
