The IMG Academy lacrosse program opened up their inaugural season over the weekend against Wharton High School, the defending Florida High School Club State Champions. With over 100 students, parents and faculty in attendance supporting the team, the atmosphere was electric. Late in the game and down by two scores, IMG Academy was able to rally and take the game into sudden-death overtime. However, the team came up short in OT by the score of 11-10.
Goalie Parker Smith, a native of Memphis, Tenn., was the key player in keeping the game close in the final minutes, allowing IMG Academy to take Wharton into overtime despite being outshot 42 to 26. Parker recorded an astounding 21 saves.
“Parker held everything together for us in goal,” said defensive coordinator Jason Basso on Smith's performance.
Basso continued: “We played a tough Wharton team. Unfortunately we made a few too many mistakes due to our lack of game experience, but we will fix that as we move forward. But it was definitely exciting to be out there for the first time and play a game."
On the offensive end, sophomores Jackson Costello and Tyler Liotta-Snyder had three goals each, while juniors Cody Gray and Jonathan Thelen had two goals apiece.
IMG Academy will be back in action on Tuesday, February 12th when they take on Manatee High School at 7:00 P.M. EST.
