MLS clubs, Columbus Crew and D.C. United, played their first exhibition match of the pre-season in a 1-0 Columbus Crew win. Both sides fielded close-to-full strength rosters for the first half, while the second half was trialist and invitees. The star of the first half was D.C. United goalkeeper, Andrew Dykstra, who had two, great first half saves against Crew veteran, Eddie Gaven. The first, a diving header that was smothered by Dykstra; the second an 18-yard blast, that Dykstra parried out for a corner kick. D.C. United’s best chance of the first half came just before halftime, when a deflected ball fell to Nick DeLeon, but the midfielder was unable to hit the target from close range.
Both coaches fielded completely different lineups in the second half. This was an opportunity for players to impress and possibly gain a roster spot for the upcoming season. It was in this second half that Justin Meram was brought down for a penalty kick. Güvenisik stepped up and stroked the penalty home to give the Crew the 1-0 win.
Next up, the Crew will be playing the Chicago Fire on Wednesday at 11:00am at IMG Academy. D.C. United will be playing against Swedish Club Malmo at 11:00am on Friday at IMG Academy.
