Money-winner Wittenberg named Web.com POY

Casey Wittenberg, who won twice and topped the money list, was named the 2012 Web.com Tour Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Wittenberg captured the money title after earning $433,453 in 24 starts. The 28-year-old, who won the Chitimacha Louisiana Open and Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open, will be fully exempt on the PGA Tour in 2013.

“I am humbled to be voted Player of the Year by my fellow players,” he said in a release. “I have greatly enjoyed the Web.com Tour. Everything about the tour is first-rate, and the competition is outstanding. It has clearly made me a better player. I head to the PGA Tour in 2013 with confidence and can’t wait to get started in January.”

Though the tour does not disclose vote totals, it likely was a close race with Luke Guthrie, the 22-year-old who won twice and earned only $20,000 less than Wittenberg, but did so in 14 fewer starts. Russell Henley, another two-time winner this season, was also on the ballot.

Wittenberg posted eight top 10s and was second in scoring average, at 69.45. The 2003 U.S. Amateur runner-up also finished T-10 at the U.S. Open.
